Fresh Gallery Otara presents an exhibition of Pacific Art from the USA

Well-known for profiling local Manukau artists and grass-roots collaborative projects, Fresh Gallery Otara will have a special international Pacific art exhibition on show from 8 August 2008.

The exhibition, Missionary Positions: An Illustrated Story of American Samoa, is by California-based Samoan painter, writer and film-maker, Dan Taulapapa McMullin.

McMullin’s work is known for being strongly narrative and historically informed, with his paintings linking in closely to his writing and film-making practices.

The concepts in his artwork draw on Samoan cultural tradition, history and the impacts of colonisation and fa’afafine (transgender) experiences. His painting style is beautiful and whimsical, often depicting dreamscapes or moments of human thoughtfulness.
