Congratulations to Terry Koloamatangi Klavenes, winner of the 2007 Martin Hughes Contemporary Pacific Art Award. Terry held his solo exhibition, “Hybrids & Hafekasis” at Fresh Gallery Otara in October 2007, which featured on the front cover of ArtZone magazine (Sept/Nov 07); Terry is also a 2007 participant in the creative incubator programme ARTsource.
Klavenes is known for his developed specialised portfolio as a graphic designer and photographer. He is also known for his public artworks around Manukau and Auckland which include art banners, murals and sculptural work. Klavenes has contributed extensively as a multi-media artist gaining commissions from both public and private sectors; his recent approach to further investigate the complexities and anxieties of his own hybridity from within the low socio-economic neighbourhoods of south Auckland, leads to personal stories of experiences shared by many migrants of Pacific ancestry.
